New York City's First Lesbian Cooperative Coffee & Cocktail Bar Is Opening in Bushwick
"Inside, a long bar wraps around a curved room that softly transitions into a cafe-style seating area. Here, patrons can sip cocktails and coffee day and night while hanging out, co-working or twirling their hair and batting their eyelashes while reading a book on Boyfriend’s thrifted and scavenged furniture. The space is softly lit by glitzy chandeliers and a candle-lined altar with photos of gay icons."
Bushwick’s Boyfriend is the new day-to-night queer space we desperately needed
"Perhaps the most unique feature of Boyfriend is that it’s built on a multi-stakeholder co-op model. According to the business' Instagram account, that means that all involved workers will have the opportunity to become owners after a six-month-long training process. On top of that, all customers will be able to purchase a co-op membership, which includes a free coffee once a month, free access to events and voting rights to help determine how the business is run."
Meet Your New ‘Boyfriend’: Brooklyn’s Queer Cocktail And Coffee Co-op
"Unlike many other queer spaces, Boyfriend pays special attention to their daytime, sober-friendly programming. As a distinctly and unapologetically leftist space, the co-op regularly hosts spaces for dialogue, radical education, and practical skill-building."
Welcome to Boyfriend Co-op, Brooklyn’s New Queer Coffee Shop and Cocktail Bar
"Designed to feel like “a queer living room,” Boyfriend is all about ethical, sustainable practices – from its cooperative ownership structure to local ingredients to thrifted furniture."
I've Been On The Hunt For The Ultimate Queer Spot & Boyfriend Co-Op Has It All
"From the moody blue-purple walls to the mishmash of secondhand furniture, the vibe inside feels kitschy and cozy, but still modern and fresh. It harkens back to the sexy, sultry spots of the '90s and 2000s—without the underlying misogyny and overt consumerism. Someone once described it to Mustafa as an “auntie’s place in Syria mixed with Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s bedroom,” which encapsulates it perfectly. "
